"SATURDAY OF THE LADIES "

IT WAS CUSTOMARY IN THE JEWISH SOSCIETY OF BAGHDAD,
TO HAVE AN OPEN HOUSE ON THE FIRST SATURDAY AFTER
THE WEDDING. HUNDREDS OF WOMEN, MOSTLY STRANGERS,
CAME TO SEE THE BRIDE DRESSED IN HER WEDDING DRESS
AND ALL HER TROUSSEAU EXHIBITED FOR ALL.
THE WOMEN ALL COVERED WITH BLACK ROBES " ABBAYAS "
SO AS NOT TO BE RECOGNIZED. THEY WOULD FILE IN TO
LOOK THROUGH THE WINDOWS AT THE BRIDE & BRIDE'S
TROUSSEAU EXHIBITED IN THE BRIDE'S BEDROOM.

PART OF THE ABOVE WAS TOLED TO ME BY MY AUNTY
NAZIMA WIFE OF UNCLE HAYAWEE SAWDAYEE, BORN IN THE
YEAR 1912.
