REMINISCENCE
SOUKAH

IT IS CUSTOMARY TO BUILD A SOUKAH IN THE
TABERNACLE FEAST, COMMEMORATING THE
ROAMING OF THE JEWS FOR FORTY YEARS IN
THE SINAI DESERT.

THE SOUKAH, WHICH WAS MADE OF EBONY,
WAS ALWAYS BUILT BY OUR CARETAKER.

THE SOUKAH'S ROOF WAS DECORATED WITH
BUNCHES OF FRUIT, ONE BUNCH FOR EACH
CHILD. EACH BUNCH CONTAINED ONE
POMEGRENATE, ONE ORANGE, ONE GRAPEFRUIT
AND ONE APPLE ALL DECORATED WITH GOLD
LEAF.

A "QURAYEE" SHABATH CANDLE WOULD ALSO
HANG DOWN FROM THE ROOF FOR EACH
WOMAN OF THE HOUSE.

SITTING WITH HER DAUGHTER VIOLETTE IS
AUNTIE NAZIMA SAWDAYEE.
